Max Dowman makes history as youngest ever Premier League champion at 16

Max Dowman has etched his name into Premier League folklore by becoming the youngest player ever to win England’s top flight title, achieving the feat at just 16 years and 144 days old.

The Arsenal academy graduate secured his place in history when Manchester City’s draw at Bournemouth on Tuesday confirmed the Gunners’ first league title in 22 years. Dowman will receive one of the 40 medals awarded to Premier League champions, having met the minimum requirement of five league appearances this season.

According to BBC Sport, the teenage midfielder has shattered multiple records during his breakthrough campaign. He first made headlines in August when he became the Premier League’s youngest ever debutant at 15 years and 235 days old, before setting another milestone in November as the Champions League’s youngest player at 15 years and 308 days.

Record-breaking season continues

Dowman’s remarkable year reached new heights in March when he scored a late goal to seal a 2-0 victory over Everton, making him the Premier League’s youngest ever goalscorer at 16 years and 73 days old. That strike proved crucial in Arsenal’s title charge, with the north London side eventually securing their first championship since 2003-04.

The youngster’s achievement surpasses the previous record held by Phil Foden, who was 17 years and 350 days old when he won his first Premier League title with Manchester City in 2017-18. Foden has since collected six league titles with City, highlighting the potential trajectory ahead for Dowman.

Dowman joins illustrious company as an Arsenal title winner, with former Gunners stars Gael Clichy and Nicolas Anelka also featuring among the Premier League’s youngest champions. Clichy was 18 years and 294 days old during Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season, while Anelka was 19 years and 57 days during the club’s 1997-98 triumph.

Academy success story

The midfielder’s rise represents a significant success for Arsenal’s academy system, with Mikel Arteta’s side benefiting from integrating youth talent into their title-winning squad. Despite making only five substitute appearances in the league this season, Dowman has contributed 12 appearances across all competitions.

His record-breaking achievements span multiple competitions, having also become the youngest player in Champions League history earlier in the campaign.
