Mikel Arteta has provided a positive update on the fitness of Leandro Trossard, following Arsenal’s impressive Emirates Cup victory.

Mikel Arteta has delivered encouraging news regarding Leandro Trossard’s return from injury, suggesting the Belgian winger could be back in action within days. The Arsenal manager spoke optimistically about Trossard’s recovery following the Gunners’ commanding 3-0 victory over Athletic Club in the Emirates Cup final at the Emirates Stadium.

Following the match, Mikel Arteta confirmed the extent of Trossard’s injury: “I think he is going to be in a few days. He had a little niggle in the groin, but he should be fine.” The update will come as welcome relief to Arsenal supporters who have been monitoring the 30-year-old’s fitness closely during pre-season.

This summer’s £48.5 million arrival of Noni Madueke from Chelsea, as well as the established Gabriel Martinelli, will see the Belgian face fierce competition for the starting role on the left-flank.

Trossard sustained the injury in the loss against Tottenham Hotspur during Arsenal’s pre-season tour, forcing him to miss the rest of pre-season. The former Brighton & Hove Albion man had been a consistent presence in Arsenal’s pre-season preparations before the setback, having started all three of the Gunners’ initial friendlies.

The Belgian international’s importance to Arsenal cannot be understated. During the 2024/25 season, Trossard contributed 10 goals and 9 assists across all competitions, establishing himself as a regular component of Arteta’s attacking setup.

Trossard’s fitness record since joining Arsenal in January 2023 has been exemplary, with the winger rarely missing matches through injury. The £27 million signing from Brighton has featured in 84 matches for the Gunners, scoring 29 goals during his time in North London.

The timing of Trossard’s return is a boost for Arsenal given the Gunners’ challenging start to the upcoming Premier League campaign. They face a daunting opening fixture list, beginning with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United next Sunday.

There remains doubts over the winger’s future, with a new deal yet to be agreed, despite talks initially starting well in June. With Mikel Arteta hinting at new arrivals, as well as further exits, Trossard could be one to make way in the next month.
