Neville claims Arsenal's consistency is 'ultimate measure' of trust

Gary Neville has defended Arsenal against accusations that their title charge has been dull to watch, insisting the Gunners’ defensive consistency deserves far more credit than it gets.
Mikel Arteta's side moved further clear at the top of the Premier League table after edging past Hull City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The result equalled Arsenal's best ever start to a league campaign, with nine wins from their opening 10 fixtures leaving them odds on to retain the title they won back in May for the first time in 22 years.

Who's out, who's back and what it means for the next two games.
It was also Arsenal's fourth consecutive clean sheet and the eighth time this season they have won by a single goal margin across all competitions, a run built on a defence that has barely been breached even with William Saliba sidelined and £55million summer signing Ezri Konsa stepping in from Aston Villa.
Neville's praise for Arteta's side
Speaking to NBC Sports, Neville was asked what single quality had impressed him most about the champions and did not hesitate in pointing to their collective discipline at the back.
“Their consistency,” Neville said. “The way in which they all defend together, they all work for each other. There are a lot of comments about Arsenal around the fact they're not exciting, they're boring, they should do a lot more and be better going forward. But we criticise a lot of teams for being poor defensively and to win 1-0 is very, very difficult. It's the ultimate measure of confidence, concentration, focus and trust you have in each other.”
Neville went further, drawing on his own experience of winning Premier League titles to explain just how difficult it is to protect a slender lead for 90 minutes without being dragged into chaos.
“What they're doing right now is outstanding and I've got a lot of admiration for them,” he added. “I've played in teams that have won Premier League titles and it was very difficult to play when you're 1-0 up. You're thinking and always balancing do we need to go and get another goal or do we just need to defend our lead. They always look in emotional control, they never get what would sort of be erratic. They are always composed and the admiration I have for them is huge.”
Scrutiny despite results
Arsenal have faced persistent criticism this season over their perceived lack of attacking flair compared to the dominant Manchester City and Liverpool sides of recent years. Neville's comments, via Metro, push back directly against that narrative, framing Arsenal's low scoring margins not as a weakness but as evidence of a squad operating with exceptional trust and control.
With the title race well underway and Arteta's side showing no signs of cracking under pressure, the debate over style versus substance is unlikely to go away soon. For now, the results continue to speak for themselves.
