Arsenal 1-2 Wolves: The Gunners Slump To Third Consecutive Home Defeat

Arsenal succumbed to their third consecutive home defeat tonight with a 2-1 loss at to Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. Goals from Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence on either side of a Gabriel header were enough to seal the three points for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

David Luiz returned to the starting line at the expense of Rob Holding, Joe Willock was given another chance to impress in midfield while Bukayo Saka and Willian flanked Pierre Emerick Aubameyang in attack as Mikel Arteta went with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Just minutes into the game, from an Arsenal corner, David Luiz and Wolves frontman Raul Jimenez were involved in a heavy clash of heads which resulted in play being stopped for more than ten minutes. Luiz was able to shake it off however it was clear he was impacted by the collision.

Jimenez looked to be knocked unconscious and was taken off the ground on a stretcher and sent directly to the hospital.

It was a very cagey affair from both sides after the incident as it took a toll on both sets of players, however Wolves settled the better and were rewarded when Pedro Neto opened the scoring in the 27th minute to give his side a deserved lead.

A driving run from Adama Traore gave him the space needed to clip a neat ball into the path of Leander Dendoncker whose header rattled off the crossbar, only for Neto to smash home the rebound.

The lead lasted less than 5 minutes however as Arsenal was immediately pressed into action. A well-worked corner from Hector Bellerin and Willian resulted in the Brazilian teeing up a delightful cross which found his countryman Gabriel who powered home his header to pull the Gunners level.

After the equaliser, both sides continued to play somewhat cagey football, with Wolves having better opportunities while Arsenal looked lively. Wolves always looked threatening on the counter and just ten minutes after conceding, Wolves again found themselves ahead.

A driving run from Neto resulted in him blazing past numerous Arsenal players as he forced a decent save from Bernd Leno however the German shot-stopper could not reel the shot in and Podence pounced on the loose ball to fire home from close range as Wolves again took the lead.

David Luiz was withdrawn at half time and replaced by Rob Holding as Arsenal had the majority of possession for the remainder of the second half however could not find a way through as Wolves were stout in defence. The Gunners had their chances with both Bukayo Saka and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang both having great chances to bring their side level however both saw their efforts go wide. It was not night Arsenal’s night as they were yet again outplayed on their home deck.

A great victory for Wolves and they were full credit for their win, and it is a result which leaves Mikel Arteta and his side languishing 14th in the league on a measly 13 points after 10 matches.

The January transfer window can not come soon enough for Arsenal as reinforcements are desperately needed, because once again they failed to create many clear-cut chances throughout the game.

It does not get any easier for Arsenal as they travel to face Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League game. It was a truly inept performance yet again from Arsenal on another horror night in North London, something which is now concerningly becoming a theme.
