The 28-year-old, who impressed at Euro 2024, is a key target for the Gunners as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Despite a quiet start to the transfer window, Arsenal is close to finalizing a €50 million (£42.1m) deal for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side is also in the market for an attacking player and a central midfielder.

The pursuit of Fabian Ruiz comes after his standout performances for Spain, where he played a crucial role in their Euro 2024 success, including two goals and two assists.

Arsenal’s Move to Acquire Fabian Ruiz

Journalist Duncan Castles revealed on The Transfers Podcast that Arsenal has initiated discussions with PSG for Ruiz.

These talks are contingent on Arsenal offloading a midfielder.

The deal may resemble the one used to bring David Raya from Brentford last summer, likely involving an initial loan with an obligation to buy later.

Ruiz, who joined PSG from Napoli for an initial €21.5m (£18.5m) in August 2022, has struggled for consistent starts, managing only 14 league appearances under Luis Enrique last season.

Despite his challenges at PSG, Ruiz was a standout player for Spain at Euro 2024, earning a spot in the UEFA team of the tournament.

His performances have made him a desirable target for Arsenal, who need reinforcements in midfield, especially with Emile Smith Rowe possibly moving to Fulham.

“For someone a Premier League club are looking at, he won more balls than anyone else at the tournament and won twice as many in the final third of the pitch as any other player. So you’ve got that pressing ability, which is fundamental to the way [Mikel] Arteta plays. He passes the ball accurately, beats opponents one on one. In many ways, he looks like an obvious fit to that Arsenal system,” Castles said.

Ruiz’s Future Prospects

When asked about his future, Ruiz told Le Parisien that he is happy in Paris and still has objectives to achieve with PSG, with three years remaining on his contract.

However, the potential move to Arsenal could offer him a fresh start and a more prominent role in Arteta’s pressing and possession-based system.

Castles noted that Ruiz’s pressing ability and accurate passing make him a good fit for Arsenal’s style of play.
