This result left both teams with mixed emotions and handed Liverpool a significant advantage in the Premier League title race.

The match, billed as a showdown between two top contenders, failed to live up to its hype.

Both Pep Guardiola’s City and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal displayed a cautious approach, resulting in a cagey affair that lacked the fireworks expected from such heavyweight opponents.

Etihad Fortress Holds Strong

Arsenal, arriving at the Etihad on the back of an impressive eight-game winning streak in the league, couldn’t break City’s dominance at home.

The hosts extended their unbeaten run at the Etihad to 39 matches across all competitions.

William Saliba expressed the team’s sentiment, saying, “We cannot be satisfied when we draw, but it’s OK, we learn from some games.”

When we cannot win, we must not lose. That’s what we did well. So, we leave with one point but we are not satisfied.”

Mikel Arteta also commented on the match, stating, “We made another big step today. Individually, you have to be at your best.”

“I think it is 2021 since they hadn’t scored a goal here at the Etihad. We wanted to win but when you cannot win, you must not lose.”

Despite this, City find themselves trailing Liverpool by three points with nine matches remaining, while Arsenal are a point better off.

Tactical Battle: Arsenal’s Defence Stands Firm Against City’s Attacks

The first half saw few clear-cut chances, with City’s Nathan Ake coming closest with a header from a corner that lacked power.

Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus also had an opportunity but hit the side-netting with a half-chance.

Both managers made attacking substitutions in the second half, but neither team could find the breakthrough as defences held firm.

Arsenal’s defence showed its strength with seven clean sheets this season, proving why it is the the best in the Premier League.

Arsenal’s defence, led by Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, proved resilient against City’s attacking threats, including Erling Haaland, who was effectively nullified throughout the match.

Bernardo Silva provided insight into Arsenal’s performance, noting, “Different team because they’re more experienced. Top side.”

“Young players with 1 more year experience & today they felt what it was like to play here last season & today I think they were much better.”

Subs Didn’t Make Much Impact

At the hour mark, Guardiola made the first move by bringing on Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku to attack from the wings.

Arteta responded by bringing on Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey, ending the attacking exchanges. Both teams were cautious about counter-attacks, leading to a lack of excitement.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli were Arteta’s key players, with Trossard testing Ortega but not troubling the City goalkeeper too much.

Few Cards, Fluid Play

The lack of cards allowed the game to flow, albeit without much excitement in terms of goal-scoring opportunities.

In the end, Arsenal will view the draw as a hard-earned point, especially considering their previous struggles at the Etihad.

However, the result means they relinquish top spot to Liverpool, who secured a vital win against Brighton earlier in the day.

With the title race heating up, every point matters, and Arsenal will need to regroup quickly as they continue their pursuit of Premier League glory.
