“Yes, very happy. It took a while,” Arteta said. “He is a player that we have monitored for about a year. We were really short in the backline last season in terms of numbers. We demanded so much from them. Wily [Saliba], for example, played every minute of the Premier League and we believe that we have to make them much more protected.”
Calafiori’s addition aims to address these issues by providing more options and increasing competition within the squad.
Arteta emphasized that Calafiori has the skills and qualities that fit well with Arsenal’s game model and holds significant potential for development.
Preventing Player Burnout
Arteta also highlighted the necessity of preventing key players from burning out.
“Especially the numbers. We ended up with six defenders in the backline. At this level, you have to be really lucky to sustain a season like this,” he said.

The manager pointed out that relying heavily on players like William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, who played more than 50% more minutes than the previous season, is unsustainable in the long term.
Adding Calafiori to the squad is seen as a strategic move to mitigate this risk and ensure the team remains competitive throughout the season.
Calafiori Joins Arsenal for Pre-Season Friendly
Riccardo Calafiori has already joined his new Arsenal teammates ahead of their pre-season friendly against Liverpool.
This match follows Arsenal’s recent 2-1 victory over Manchester United, with goals from Gabriel and Martinelli boosting the team’s morale.
The inclusion of Calafiori is expected to further strengthen the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
