Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory over Tottenham in the north London derby has come under scrutiny, with club legend Paul Merson suggesting that the winning goal should have been disallowed.

Paul Merson questions Arsenal's goal

Gabriel Magalhaes’ header in the 64th minute proved decisive, but Merson believes a foul on Tottenham defender Cristian Romero was overlooked.

Despite Arsenal securing three vital points, Merson’s post-match comments have sparked debate about the goal that separated the two sides at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Merson: Romero Foul Overlooked

Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson argued that Arsenal’s match-winning goal should not have stood due to a push on Cristian Romero.

Gabriel Magalhaes rose highest to head the ball into the net, but Merson believes the Brazilian unfairly shoved his marker, preventing Romero from effectively defending the set piece.

“I would be disappointed if I didn’t get a foul,” Merson said, criticising Romero’s positioning but acknowledging that the Argentine defender was unlucky.

“He’s an international centre-half, and everything was wrong about his defending. But I do think I’d expect a foul in that situation.”

The controversy centres on whether the push was strong enough to warrant disallowing the goal.

While Merson was critical of Romero’s defending, he insisted that a foul should have been called, which would have denied Arsenal their match-winning moment.

Arsenal Overcome Challenges to Secure Victory

Despite having fewer shots and less possession, Arsenal’s defence stood firm to secure a third consecutive win at Tottenham’s home ground.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ goal came in the 64th minute, after Jorginho and Thomas Partey anchored the midfield in the absence of key players.

With Declan Rice suspended and Martin Odegaard sidelined due to injury, Mikel Arteta had to reshuffle his team.

Jorginho praised the team’s resilience after the game, emphasising the depth of the squad.

“We were missing key players, but we have a total team, the whole squad. We know whoever comes on is going to be ready to help,” he told Sky Sports.

Arsenal’s defence was particularly solid, limiting Tottenham’s attacking efforts to speculative crosses and long-range shots.

Spurs failed to create clear-cut chances, as Arsenal’s backline prevented any serious threats, securing a hard-fought clean sheet.

The win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium boosts Arsenal’s title hopes, keeping them firmly in the race as they continue to challenge at the top of the Premier League table.

Despite missing key midfielders, the Gunners’ defence and determination saw them through a tense derby.

Arteta’s side has now won three consecutive matches away to Tottenham, a feat that will only strengthen their confidence heading into the crucial weeks of the season.
