Takehiro Tomiyasu Extends Arsenal Stay with New Long-Term Contract

Arsenal Football Club has announced the extension of Takehiro Tomiyasu‘s contract, securing his services until 2026, with an option for an additional year.

The Japanese defender, known affectionately as Tomi, has become a vital part of Arsenal’s squad since joining the club in August 2021 from Serie A side Bologna.

Tomiyasu’s journey in professional football began with Avispa Fukuoka in his hometown, where he rose through the ranks of youth football and made 45 first-team appearances before moving to Europe.

In the winter transfer window of 2018, Tomi made the switch to Europe by joining Belgian club Sint-Truiden.

He impressed with his performances, earning the title of the club’s player of the season for the 2018/19 campaign.

Subsequently, in July 2019, Tomi secured a move to Bologna, where he established himself as a key defender, featuring in 63 games across his two seasons in Serie A.

His versatility and defensive prowess have been evident throughout his time at Arsenal, having played in all positions across the backline and amassing 73 appearances in all competitions.

Tomi is Here to Stay

Expressing his excitement about Tomiyasu’s contract extension, Arsenal’s Sporting Director Edu stated, “We are very excited to have Tomi with us for more years to come. He has huge qualities both on and off the pitch, and offers so much strength and versatility to our squad.”

Manager Mikel Arteta also praised Tomiyasu, highlighting his commitment, professionalism, and positive impact on the team.

“We are so pleased to have Tomi commit his future with us,” said Arteta. “Tomi’s attitude, mentality, and values are first-class. The way he trains, with his desire and determination to be the best version of himself every day is admirable.”

Tomiyasu’s contributions on the field have been significant, with 20 appearances in all competitions this season.

His standout moment came in October when he scored his first goal for Arsenal during a 5-0 Premier League victory against Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium.
