The Real Sociedad midfielder grabbed attention with a dramatic last-minute header against Germany, sending Spain to the semi-finals of the European Championship.

Mikel Merino, who had a brief stint at Newcastle United before returning to Spain in 2018, has caught the eye of Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta.

According to The Athletic, Arteta is a big fan of the 28-year-old’s skills and physical presence on the field.

Despite usually targeting younger players, Arsenal is considering an exception for Merino, aiming to strengthen their midfield with his experience and talent.

Arsenal Targeting Mikel Merino, Nico Williams

Arsenal’s interest in Merino follows their pursuit of another Euro 2024 star, Nico Williams.

The Athletic Bilbao winger has been a standout performer in the tournament, making him Arteta’s top choice for a wide player if the Gunners decide to make a move in that position.

Williams, who scored five goals and provided 11 assists last season, has garnered interest from top clubs like Barcelona and Chelsea.

Despite the transfer buzz, Williams remains focused on his current club and the Euros.

He has expressed contentment with his life in Bilbao, saying, “I am so happy in Bilbao, I signed a new deal and performed well last season. I feel at home, but I don’t know what I will do. Nobody can tell you about the future.”

Calafiori Deal Nearing Completion

Alongside their midfield and attacking targets, Arsenal are reportedly close to signing Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

This addition highlights Arsenal’s intent to bolster multiple areas of their squad ahead of the new season.

Arteta’s strategic moves in the transfer market aim to enhance Arsenal’s chances in both domestic and European competitions.

As Arsenal prepares for the upcoming season, the potential signings of Mikel Merino, Williams, and Calafiori indicate a determined effort to reinforce their squad with high-caliber players.
