Under the guidance of Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar, the club aims to strengthen the squad for the upcoming 2024/25 Premier League season.

After narrowly missing out on the title last season, finishing just two points behind the champions, Arsenal is determined to go one step further this time.

Arsenal’s Interest in Mikel Merino

According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal has initiated contact with Mikel Merino, who is now a top priority.

The Gunners are in search of a new midfielder, having decided against pursuing Douglas Luiz and Amadou Onana, who have since moved to Juventus and Aston Villa respectively.

Romano reported that Arsenal has begun discussions with Merino, currently with Real Sociedad, who is expected to leave as he enters the final year of his contract.

Mikel Arteta, who has closely followed Real Sociedad’s attractive style of play, is keen on Merino.

The Spaniard, praised as ‘world-class’ by Kieran Tierney, could be a key addition to Arsenal’s midfield.

Romano stated, “Merino is one of the names they have on the list. There is interest, and they made some contact with the player’s side. The relationship is also good.”

Arteta’s Strategic Signings

Arsenal’s recruitment strategy has been impressive over the past two seasons.

The days of overpaying for unproven players are behind them, as the club now targets players with a clear plan in mind.

Last season, the left side of the pitch was notably weak, especially after Granit Xhaka’s departure, which impacted both the left winger and left back positions.

Calafiori’s arrival addresses one of these issues, and securing Merino could solve the other.

With the addition of Merino, and potentially a prolific forward, Arsenal could be well-positioned to start the season as Premier League favourites
