Not Just About Money
According to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, Obi-Martin’s decision to leave Arsenal was not driven by financial reasons.
Despite the club’s efforts to keep him with improved scholarship terms and a planned professional contract at age 17, the young striker sought a clearer pathway to the first team, which he felt Arsenal could not guarantee.
Obi-Martin’s impressive performance last season, including 32 goals and three assists in 20 under-18 Premier League matches, showcased his potential.
Arsenal offered Obi-Martin new and improved schoolboy terms to convince him to stay, and there was an agreement in place over the contract, but the teenage sensation wanted to move on.
He reckoned his career development is best served somewhere else, and will now weigh up his options ahead of making a crucial decision.
However, his doubts about Arsenal’s project and his future development led him to explore other options, with Manchester United emerging as a likely destination.
Arsenal has faced challenges in providing first-team opportunities for their young talents.
Recent examples include Reuell Walters and Amario Cozier-Duberry, who despite regularly training with the senior team and being included in matchday squads, did not make their official debuts under manager Mikel Arteta.
