The Gunners have already strengthened their squad this summer and now appear focused on bolstering their midfield with Merino from Real Sociedad.

Gunners Strengthen Defense Ahead of Midfield Addition

Arsenal have been active in the transfer market, particularly in reinforcing their defensive line.

The club signed goalkeeper David Raya on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell from Brentford last season.

Additionally, they added Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori in a £42 million deal from Bologna.

With their defense now solidified, Arsenal’s attention has turned to adding a defensive midfielder to their ranks, which could allow new signing Declan Rice to play a more advanced role.

Mikel Merino, who has been a standout player for Real Sociedad, has emerged as Arsenal’s primary target.

The Spanish midfielder is expected to provide the defensive stability the team needs, allowing Rice more freedom to push forward and contribute to the attack.

Reports suggest that Merino could be on his way to the Emirates in a £34 million deal, with Sociedad’s president, Jokin Aperribay, currently in London to finalize the transfer.

Merino missed training earlier this week, reportedly due to back discomfort, further fueling speculation about his imminent move to North London.

Charlie Patino Set for Arsenal Exit

As Arsenal look to bring in Merino, they are also managing crucial outgoings to balance the squad.

Following the departure of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham in a £27 million move, another young talent is set to leave the Emirates.

Charlie Patino, a 20-year-old product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, has agreed on a move to Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna.

Patino, who joined Arsenal from Luton Town in 2015, has spent the past two seasons on loan at Blackpool and Swansea City.

He has also represented England at various youth levels, making his way up to the under-21s.

The midfielder made his first-team debut for Arsenal during the 2021/22 season, scoring in a 5-1 victory over Sunderland.

However, with just one year remaining on his contract, Patino is set to join Deportivo in a permanent £1 million transfer.

His Spanish passport makes him an attractive option for European clubs, and Arsenal have reportedly negotiated a significant sell-on clause as part of the deal.

As Arsenal continue to shape their squad for the upcoming season, the potential arrival of Merino and the departure of Patino highlight the club’s strategic moves in the transfer market.

With the window set to close soon, Arsenal fans will be eagerly awaiting confirmation of these deals.
