Arsenal Secure Agreement to Sign Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad

Arsenal have finally secured the agreement to sign their top midfield target, Mikel Merino, from Real Sociedad, following protracted negotiations that spanned several weeks.
The deal, confirmed by reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano, marks a significant addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad as they prepare for the new season.
Finalising the Deal
Arsenal had initially agreed on personal terms with Merino last month, but the transfer negotiations hit a snag due to differences in the player’s valuation.

After multiple discussions, Real Sociedad’s president, Jokin Aperribay, traveled to London earlier this week to finalize the terms.
Romano has now confirmed that the deal is in place, with Arsenal set to pay an initial £27.2 million, with an additional £4.2 million in performance-related add-ons.
The agreement was announced on Romano’s social media account, X, where he posted, “Mikel Merino to Arsenal, here we go! Verbal agreement in place for Spanish midfielder to join Gunners. €32m plus €5m add-ons with favorable payment terms. Contract until 2028. Arsenal were closing in on Merino deal since end of July, Merino only wanted Arsenal.”
Merino’s Impact and Potential
Mikel Merino, 28, has been a standout performer in La Liga, establishing himself as one of the best central midfielders in the league.
Known for his strong duel-winning ability and aerial presence, Merino has also been praised for his forward passing, contributing to 13 goals for Real Sociedad last season.
His impressive performances have earned him the admiration of Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, who described him as “world-class.”
Merino also played a crucial role in Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign, where he featured in all seven of their matches and scored a dramatic winner in the quarter-final against Germany.
His combination of defensive skills and creativity is expected to enhance Arsenal’s midfield, with Merino likely to take on the role of a regular number eight, playing alongside Declan Rice.
Next Steps for Arsenal and Mikel Merino
The transfer agreement is set, and Merino is now expected to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract with Arsenal.
The midfielder’s addition will significantly bolster Arsenal’s squad depth as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
His experience and versatility will be vital for Arteta’s tactical setup, providing the team with more options in the center of the park.
Arsenal’s interest in Merino predates his Euro 2024 heroics, with the Gunners scouting him extensively last season during his exceptional performances for Real Sociedad.
Now, with the deal nearing completion, Arsenal fans can look forward to seeing Merino in action, adding strength and creativity to their midfield.
