According to journalist Charles Watts, the Gunners are keenly interested in Merino, though the negotiations are still in the early stages.

Arsenal Pursue Merino for Midfield Reinforcement

Arsenal’s interest in Merino comes as part of their broader strategy to bolster their midfield.

With the Euros now concluded, Arsenal is positioned to move forward with their pursuit of the Spanish international.

Watts notes, “Arsenal are interested in Mikel Merino, but I’m not aware that things have moved beyond the interest stage yet. He is a player they appreciate, but it’s been difficult to progress things while Merino has been away with Spain at the Euros.”

Merino, who has just a year remaining on his contract with Real Sociedad, presents an attractive option for Arsenal.

His potential availability at a lower cost compared to other midfield targets makes him particularly appealing.

Real Sociedad may be inclined to sell Merino this summer to avoid losing him for free when his contract expires.

Watts adds, “Now the tournament is over of course, the opportunity to firm up that interest and try and get a deal done for the midfielder is there, but I’ve not been told that things have reached that stage yet.”

Versatility and Experience

Merino’s versatility is a key factor in Arsenal’s interest.

He can play both as a No.6 and in a more advanced box-to-box role, fitting the profile of players Arteta values.

Although he is slightly older than the typical player Arsenal targets, his experience and adaptability make him a valuable asset.

Watts comments, “Merino could be a more appealing option than Zubimendi because he would cost far less than the 25-year-old. He only has a year left on his contract with Real Sociedad and it’s understood that the La Liga side would be willing to accept an offer for the midfielder this summer rather than risk losing him on a free.”

“And Merino does tick a lot of the boxes in terms of what Arsenal are looking for a new midfielder,” Watts added.
