Arteta Considers £51k-per-Week Player as Bargain Addition for Arsenal

One significant target is Riccardo Calafiori, with whom Arsenal has agreed on personal terms for a five-year contract.

However, negotiations over the final fee and payment structure are ongoing.

There has been speculation around a potential exit for England’s Aaron Ramsdale, prompting Arsenal to search for backup options for current number one, David Raya.

Raya joined Arsenal permanently in a £27 million deal from Brentford. The club has made bids for Wolves keeper Daniel Bentley, but initial offers have fallen short of Wolves’ valuation.

In addition, Arsenal signed young England Under-20 international keeper Tommy Setford from Ajax, though he is viewed as a future prospect rather than an immediate replacement for Ramsdale.

The need for a new midfielder is also pressing, as uncertainty surrounds Thomas Partey’s future.

The Spain international played a crucial role in his country’s Euro 2024 triumph, scoring the winner against hosts Germany in the quarter-finals.

Merino’s contract, worth £51,000 per week, is set to expire next year, making him an attractive option at around £25 million.

Merino not only shone for Spain but also had a stellar season at the club level, making 45 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad.
