Arsenal is close to finalizing the signing of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, marking another significant move in their summer transfer activity.

Mikel Merino is on his way to London for his Arsenal medical.

Despite a relatively quiet transfer window, the Gunners have now set their sights on bolstering their squad further, with a focus on securing a new winger to provide depth on the right flank.

Merino Deal Nearing Completion

After weeks of negotiations, Arsenal has finally reached an agreement with Real Sociedad to bring Mikel Merino to the Emirates.

The prolonged discussions between the two clubs had left many fans anxious, but the deal now appears to be in its final stages.

Merino is expected to undergo a medical with Arsenal soon, paving the way for his official unveiling.

The addition of Merino follows Arsenal’s earlier moves in the transfer window, including converting David Raya’s loan into a permanent deal and the acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori.

However, while fans have been eager for the arrival of a new forward, Arsenal’s next priority lies elsewhere.

Focus Shifts to a Backup Winger

According to David Ornstein, speaking on the Transfers Podcast, Arsenal’s attention has now turned to signing a backup winger after securing the Merino deal.

The club is keen on finding a wide player who is content with a secondary role but can still make a significant impact when called upon.

Ornstein explained that Arsenal is in a challenging position, similar to the dilemma faced by Tottenham with Harry Kane, where finding a player willing to be a backup yet still capable of helping the team achieve major honors is crucial.

The Gunners are particularly focused on finding a left-footed right-winger to provide cover for Bukayo Saka, their star player in that position.

Arsenal Potential Target: Johan Bakayoko

Arsenal need for a backup right-winger has led to speculation about potential targets, with PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko emerging as a strong candidate.

The 21-year-old had an impressive 2023/24 season, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists, and he has already started the current Eredivisie campaign in fine form with two goals in two games.

Bakayoko’s attacking prowess would be a valuable asset for Arsenal, but it remains uncertain whether he would be willing to accept a role behind Saka.

Nevertheless, his profile fits Arsenal’s requirements, and a move in the final week of the transfer window could be on the cards if the club decides to pursue him.
