Arsenal Aiming for Next Major Signing Following Riccardo Calafiori Acquisition

Barcelona officials are increasingly convinced that their £55 million transfer target, Mikel Merino, prefers a move to Arsenal over other options.
Atletico Madrid shares this belief, adding weight to the speculation surrounding Merino’s next club.

The 22-year-old Italian defender, who played a significant role in Bologna’s Champions League qualification and shone at Euro 2024, can operate both as a centre-back and a left-back.
Calafiori’s addition is a significant boost for manager Mikel Arteta as he aims to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.
Calafiori has already joined Arsenal’s pre-season tour in the USA, integrating into the squad ahead of the new season.
With this signing, Arsenal has bolstered their defensive options, but the club’s focus is now shifting to further strengthening the squad before the transfer window closes on August 30.
Arsenal Eyeing Midfield Reinforcements
Following the arrival of Calafiori, Arsenal’s sporting director Edu Gaspar is now targeting midfield reinforcements.
The club has been linked with several players, including Fabian Ruiz from Paris-Saint Germain, with talks reportedly ongoing.
A potential loan deal for Ruiz could materialize, adding creative depth to the squad.
Another key name on Arsenal’s radar is Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino.
With a £55 million release clause and a contract expiring next year, Merino could be available for a lower fee.
Merino, a standout performer for Spain at Euro 2024, scoring the decisive goal against Germany in the quarter-finals, has also caught the attention of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Mikel Merino Prioritizing Arsenal Move
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently shared that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid believe Merino is prioritizing a move to Arsenal.
According to Romano, “Atletico had in their list Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad. Atletico and Barca, both clubs are still thinking of Mikel Merino, but both clubs feel that Mikel Merino is giving total priority to Arsenal.”
Described as a “well-rounded” player and “one of the best” in La Liga by performance analyst Marcus Bring, Merino’s versatility and skill set make him a valuable asset.
Last season, he notched eight goals and five assists in 45 appearances for Sociedad.
If Arsenal secures Merino’s signature, it would be a significant coup for the North London club, further enhancing their midfield options as they prepare for the upcoming season.
