Fabrizio Romano Shares What He’s Heard on Arteta’s Behind-the-Scenes Work at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has faced a challenging summer as Arsenal’s transfer window started slowly, taking over a month to gain momentum.
Following their pre-season tour in the United States, where they suffered a defeat against Liverpool, Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu Gaspar, has finally initiated their transfer activities.

The Italy international did not participate in the final game of the American tour against Arne Slot’s side.
Instead, the tour served as a bonding opportunity for the new recruit. It appears that Edu wasn’t the only one busy; Mikel Arteta has also been working diligently behind the scenes.
‘Mikel Arteta is influential’
Next on Arsenal’s agenda is a potential transfer for Mikel Merino, who has just a year left on his contract with Real Sociedad.
Arsenal is confident that Merino is keen to join them, with Real Sociedad already anticipating the midfielder’s departure.
Discussions between the clubs are ongoing, with a bid around £25 million expected to secure the deal.
Merino is highly valued by Arteta, who is familiar with the Spanish club’s operations.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arteta has played a significant role in Arsenal’s recruitment this summer.
Romano stated, “Arteta is, we know, discussing a contract extension, and Arsenal expects it to be done soon. But also, Mikel Arteta is really influential on the market of Arsenal, together with Edu Gaspar, of course. Arteta wanted Calafiori as a priority target, and he’s now at Arsenal. They did an excellent job. And Mikel Arteta is also behind this story for Mikel Merino.”
Focus on Quality Over Quantity
Arsenal’s focus this summer is on securing high-quality signings rather than numerous additions.
Last season, Arsenal finished just two points behind Manchester City after 38 Premier League games.
This narrow margin suggests that a couple of strategic signings could significantly impact the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.
